The Cottage

The Cottage:

What: The Cottage is our example of public health.  It is a place in Athens where survivors of sexual assault or child abuse can go to seek "intervention, referrals, and support."  The Cottage also raises "awareness throughout the Athens community about these issues."
How:   The Cottage is an example of public health because it is a place for people to go when they are victims of violence in the community.  Places such as this one provide a safe place for survivors of trauma and help decrease violence in Athens.
Why: We chose this example because the Cottage represents a great public service method towards the community. There are so many victims of sexual assault and child abuse that need a place to feel safe and the Cottage creates a safe environment for them.
Why is this Important: This example is important because places like the Cottage help victims of child abuse and sexual assault with services free of charge. The Cottage provides facilities and programs to help victims in need, who otherwise wouldn’t get the treatment they need. Not only does the Cottage provide healing services, but also provides prevention education. Finally, the cottage promotes awareness to the world about sexual assault and child abuse.

  1. I had no idea that the cottage existed. I think it is a great idea and a great example of public health. So many victims of sexual assault and child abuse stay silent because they have nowhere to go so the cottage is an amazing way to raise awareness and help victims.
