What is public health? Students in the UGA Health & Wellness class are here to help you find out! They have strategically identified examples in the Athens community that they feel represent public health in action. This blog is dedicated to explaining, understanding, and discussing what their interpretations of public health, as well as their reactions to learning about topics of health and wellness.

Reflection: Plants-based Diet Video
Throughout
the semester we watched a handful of videos that dealt with public
health issues and topics in America. One that particularly interested
our group was the video that centered around the importance of having
a plants-based diet. This video caught our attention because it
advocated a specific kind of healthy diet. It didn't push for the
audience to eat healthier by eating less red and fried meats. No,
they instead pushed for a sole vegetarian diet.
Another
thing about this “plants-based diet” video that our group
especially liked was their good approach in trying to raise
awareness about the positive effects of adopting such a diet. They
didn't try to guilt trip people into being vegetarians by showing
them clips of tortured and neglected farm animals. Instead, it opted
in giving logical and scientific reasons to switch over to a
plants-based diet. A nutritionist that was featured in this video
talked about how this diet has helped people fight and even overcome
some of their health issues because with a plants-based diet people
are getting the necessary and proper nutrients to keep their bodies
running on good fuel. Plants don't come factory-made and they don't
come packed with fats so they are a healthier and much smarter
alternative to nearly all other foods.
This
plants-based diet information can have an impact on us both
physically and socially. Putting this method of eating fruits and
vegetables into our lives will have a positive effect on our bodies
because fruits and vegetables provide natural vitamins and nutrients.
From the video we learned that plants give us a quicker and more
satisfied feeling than other foods such as meats and snacks so just
eating plants should help us be more wary about the amount of food we
eat. It should also help combat overeating and obesity. It was also
shown in the video, that people who have long been living by this
diet have experienced much slower aging and have in turn looked
younger than their years tell. This is a huge plus for having such a
healthy diet! Having a plants-based diet can affect your social life
because eating meats and junk foods are commonplace for the majority
of people. It shouldn't stop anyone from eating out with friends and
family at restaurants though. The public nowadays has become aware of
a need for vegetarian dishes and so salads are now widely available.
This
topic of choosing a healthy diet is important to public health
because everyone eats. There's no way going around it otherwise you
die. It's important for families, friends, and communities to eat a
plants-based diet because of all the positive effects it has on our
bodies. Plants and vegetables keep one healthy and it's always
detrimental for a nation's people to be and stay healthy because that
in turn affects everyone around us. Take this country for example.
There are a growing number of people that are becoming overweight and
obese and that's affecting where their money goes. Their health
issues take a lot of time from doctors about issues that could have
easily been avoided if a plants-based diet had been in place. It's
important to raise awareness about living well and how to achieve
that status.
The
only questions that my group has is whether or not the government
will issue an type of campaign about this vegetarian-styled diet? Why haven't they already? How
will this potentially affect the meat industry if this diet becomes a
fad? How will this diet affect kids and will it be safe for them to
be on this plants-based diet?

Reflection On Ben Gray's Nutrition Presentation
In Ben Gray's presentation, he talked to us about the importance of nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle in college students. We learned from him how to have a balance lifestyle by exercising and getting the proper nutrition. Also, we learned what the right amount of portions you need a day per food group and the amount of time you should exercise per day. This topic interested me specifically because I'm a student athlete here at UGA and knowing how to keep my body healthy is really important to me. It is very important for me to stay healthy and in shape in order to be at my best at practice and cheering at football or basketball games. Since I have to workout twice a week, I'm able to stay active but I was unaware of how to have a healthy diet because all the pressures of the delicious dining hall food. So Mr. Gray's talk to us about obesity in college students alerted me to look after my eating habits because working out just isn't enough. This topic is important to public health because everyone needs to be aware of their own health if they want to live a long happy life. It is important to maintain a healthy body weight and making sure you get the right amount of nutrients and exercise on a day to day basis. I have remaining questions about how I can eat healthy in the dining halls? Also, I like my sweets and my fried foods and I know its okay to splurge sometimes but is it okay to do it more than once or twice a week?

Cigarette Trashcan
This is a cigarette trashcan that is located in downtown Athens. This is an example of public health because it prevents people from putting their cigarettes on the ground where children, dogs, and other people can come come in contact with them. It also keeps the city looking cleaner by keeping the cigarettes from littering the ground. This trash can also has vents on the side so that the smoke can safely be put out and so the smoke cannot harm anyone. I chose to post this trashcan because I think that it is a good preventative measure taken to keep people safe while keeping smokers from being mad. Everyone else needs to consider this an example of public health because of all of the benefits this trashcan has! It keeps Athens healthy, happy, cleaner, and prettier by keeping gross cigarettes off of the streets and safely put away.

Reaction to the Contraception Lecture
When Katy Janousek spoke about contraception I didn't expect to learn as much as I did. Maybe it is because I am a male, and I really don't have to worry about contraception too much, or if it was just I wasn't taught all of the interesting things Ms. Janousek spoke about before this class. I know about the pill, the Nuva Ring, and Plan B before she came in, and I felt post people had known about those contraceptive devices but there was a lot that we still discussed about. She discussed the Depo Provera Shot, the OrthoEvra Patch and Impanon which I thought were really interesting forms of contraception. Then she discussed the IUDs, the Intrauterine Device. This was were modern technology was. It was considered the best contraceptive method, stops periods and works for 5 years. I was totally amazed that we actually had medical advances such as that. Then I wondered again, "was I expected to know about these before Ms. Janousek spoke about them or was this supposed to be new material?" Unless I poll the class, I think I'll never know but it really sparked my interest about sexual education currently in the United States. Did I really have to take HPBR 1710 to actually get this information? It sure feels like it. So do the other students on campus know about these contraceptive methods?
The presentation really shows the major hurdle with sexual education in the United States currently. How do we get the other students on campus to know about these contraceptive methods? To be realistic we know everyone in our friend group who is sexually active or just about. We know so and so is having sex, we might even talk about past sexual encounters with a friend. But publicly even just making the slightest hint to sex is taboo. If Ms. Janousek had fliers of just the worksheet we filled out in class and passed them out in the Tate Plaza I think the information wouldn't grasp people. "Ugh! A contraception flier? Gross!" We would probably hear that a lot even from the people currently using contraceptives. This is the problem with sexual education. The most efficient way of informing people of these new, and actually incredibly cheap, contraceptives is by fliers and PSAs but I think they wont be effective. People would get too scared either from feeling "awkward" or "grossed out" even when this is really important information. So how do we inform the youth about sexual health and contraceptives? Am I really the only odd person that didn't know about these things or does there need to a social change about how we view sex? We can surely keep sex private, but owning up to the fact we have sex would help students realize these different contraceptive methods are okay thus improving public health.

Bodyplex Fitness Center
The picture above is Bodyplex Fitness Adventure located on Alps Road in Athens, GA.
Our group chose this example because we all agreed that exercise helps
with not only losing those few extra pounds, but improving our mind, decreasing our stress levels after a long day of classes, and gives us the energy we need
to carry on throughout the day. Living in a college town it is difficult to
fall into poor health habits, so BodyPlex is a great way to makeup for some
unhealthy choices. They even offer monthly deals that can easily fit into a
tight college budget. I love how BodyPlex makes working out and being healthy a
wonderful experience, from the supportive and helpful staff to the positive
atmosphere.
I believe it is
extremely important that others consider a gym a part of public health.
Exercise is one of the greatest factors in improving your overall quality of
life. Bodyplex promotes healthy choices and after just a few trips to the gym
you can easily see how much it improves your self-confidence and mood. All it
takes is less than one hour out of your day to workout and I guarantee it will
benefit you now and in the future.
