Helping the Homeless

For our second picture of what we think represents Public Health, we found a place for donations for the homeless in Downtown Athens. Since Athens-Clarke County is one of the poorest counties in the nation, we felt this is a pertinent issue for us. We all walk by panhandlers downtown who ask for money. Since the county provides this box, we know what the money is actually going toward. Although many oversee homelessness as a form of public health, it is something that surrounds us, no matter where we live.  The money donated to this box could help the homeless get food and clothing, which is something little that could help their own health. If we all donated even a tiny amount when we walked by this box downtown, we could all make a difference in someone’s life, even if it’s in the smallest way.

  1. My group and I think this is a really interesting post because this is such an issue here in Athens and believe that it is great that there are spots like this for people to donate. So many times, we just hand money to pan handlers without giving it a second thought. There is no way of knowing where that money is being spent and whether it is going to something that is going to improve their public health. By placing this here, it is a good way of bringing all of the money together to buy necessities for the homeless. There should definitely be more of these because I know that there are a lot of people who want to help the homeless, and this is a great, organized way to give people that opportunity. This is only going to improve the physical, mental, and social health of the homeless. Great job on this post! Definitely a current issue here around Athens!

  2. My group and I also agree that Homelessness is a growing issue in our country that could use a great deal of attention and funding. I'm sure we have all seen it. Homeless people sleeping on benches or sidewalks, begging for money. Athens, Georgia is surely not a stranger to this problem. This saddening topic is one that is too familiar in these difficult economic times. It is great that there is a program that is working to improve the lifestyle of these people. The fact that the money is going toward providing homeless people with the essentials that they need pushes us toward a better society. We know that the money is not being given to pan handlers for what they believe is essential to their lifestyle but being used to try and put them back on their feet. This money could help provide people with food, clothing and even shelter in the Athens community. This county (Athens) has struggled with poverty for over ten years so it did not happen over night and will take time and effort to fix. This program is definitely a great start to that improvement. Another awesome program that many of you may already know about, implemented in many areas and even in Athens, is Habitat for Humanity. Athens Habitat is looking at high poverty areas in which they can begin to build homes. Being a part of Habitat is a wonderful way to give back and help people in need. I really liked this post and think it adresses a pressing issue that can use our help to try and better the quality of life for those less fortunate than us. Great job!
