Allergen Notice photo
This was in Menchies next to the yogurt toppings. It is a warning not only of what the different toppings may contain, but a warning that no matter if it has one of these common allergens in it or not, it was made in the same plant as peanuts and tree nuts. This is important because people who are severely allergic to these things can have a reaction even if something they eat was made in the same place as what they are allergic to. This is an example of public health because this allergen notice could save someone from that kind of life threatening reaction. I chose this example because I have a family member who has had a life threatening reaction in a restaurant to a food that did not contain peanuts, but was made in the same area as other dishes that did. Other restaurants should take note of this because I believe it is something that more places need to begin thinking about displaying, especially as the number of children allergic to the big 8 allergens keeps increasing.

I think this is very important to public health and a great example. This post stood out to me because I am allergic to nuts, and this warning is very important to me.

I think that this is very important to public health because allergens are on the rise; doctors are seeing more and more children and adults come in with serious allergies to everyday materials, foods, and aspects of nature. I know from having a little sister who is allergic to peanuts that reactions to foods can be very dangerous; with a strong enough dose and without the proper medication, allergic reactions can land people in the hospital and in some cases, be fatal. Menchies efforts to alert its customers about the potential danger its products may have on people with allergies is a responsible way for them to play a part in enriching the public health scene in Athens.
