This is public health blog photo Olivia Lee April 4, 2013

This is a photo of an evacuation plan that is posted on the inside of my door where I live in Athens. This notice is definitely an example of public health because with the amount of people who live in my building, if there was a fire it would be absolute chaos if there was not a specific plan for each individual in the building. Because this is posted on each person's door, everyone knows exactly where to go and what to do in case of a fire. As shown in the picture, it is imperative that I leave the sign on my door at all times. This is because it is extremely important in case of an emergency.
I chose this example because it is very well known that public health is relative to washing hands, trash cans, and recycling; however, not many people think about other hazards to our health such as fires or other disasters in the community.
It is pressing that other people view these examples as public health as well because it affects everyone. Everyone needs to know what to do in a situation such as a fire and if it weren't for signs such as these, those disasters could potentially have a higher consequence.
I think it is important that people understand and realize that public health can be anything affecting our health and well-being and this does not just include sanitation.

  1. I totally agree with Olivia! This is definitely a public health example that is overlooked, but is just as important as trash cans, recycling, etc. because it affects everyone. Fires happen everyday and it is important for people to know what to do in such a chaotic situation. I think these signs should be posted in every building, not just apartments, because it would make a larger population aware of what to do during a fire for their safety, as well as the safety of others.
