Reaction Piece - Healthy/Abusive Relationships
The topic that has interested me the most this semester has been the topic of healthy/abusive relationships. Seeing how certain relationship dynamics can be seen as abusive has really opened my eyes and have made me question some of the relationships that my friends are currently in. I never thought that refusing to let a person leave a situation could be considered abuse, but upon reflection, I can definitely see why this would be a form of physical abuse. This topic is important to public health because we all deserve to live in a violence-free society where physical abuse is reduced to a minimum. The reduction of abusive relationships would contribute to a much healthier society and would reduce the amount of physical and psychological damage the our society currently endures. The question of how to reduce these occurrences is still an important one. Perhaps increasing awareness of the issue and making the punishments for such abusers more severe would help to remedy this issue in some way.

Winston, I agree with several of the points that you are making. I also did not realize that not letting someone leave a situation is considered abuse, but it makes sense to me now. I agree that healthy relationships are important to help everyone live in an healthier environment. Your suggestion to raise awareness of the issue and making harsher punishments is good. I think it would be good to inform everyone of what constitutes an unhealthy relationship so people would be more likely to take a stand up against it.
